Just got done with a restoration of my '87 short bed. Used POR-15 gloss
black on the frame, just used it on the hubs last night. I'm VERY
impressed. The stuff is pretty thin, goes on real nice, and dries hard as a
rock! The only prep work I did on the frame was using my air chisel to take
off the remaining factory undercoating and any obviously loose rust.
I bought the whole package - marine cleaner, prep, and paint. The marine
cleaner is a really good alkaline cleaner, similar to some of the "Purple"
cleaners at auto parts stores. You can dilute it way down, so for the price
I guess it's a good value. The prep stuff was a waste for my application.
It's some kind of acid to etch new, smooth metal. Believe me, my truck had
none of that! POR-15 adheres best to a rough surface, so new metal needs
the etching.
As far as coverage, I used 1/2 quart to do the frame from the cab back.
I don't know of any other place to purchase it, I ordered it from their
website.

Hi all, just a note that I think one of the best ways to get POR-15
at the best price is to flip through a Hemmings Motor News Magazine.
There are always at least ten vendors all vying for the lowest price,
and yes, POR-15 is awesome stuff. I used it when I restored my 65
Benz and depending on how you apply it, it can go on smooth or
textured. I like using a mini trim type sponge roller for doing
areas like the frame cause it goes on even with no brush marks. A
smooth cotton cloth roller is good for doing areas that require more
smoothness but no matter how you apply it, it will never be smooth
like you'd want for a paint job; its a protective thing not really a
cosmetic one. The remark about being hard to get off skin it true
though so steal your wife's rubber dishwashing gloves, use a
respirator and go to it.

Subject: cracked frame
Hey!!! everybody with an 85 and older truck take a look at your frame,
left side, just aft of the front spring hanger on the outside. I noticed a
small crack after the rubicon, but it doubled in length after I ran swamp
lake. I saw on Jay K's page that he had a similar problem. I stop drilled
and cleaned up the crack and then welded it, this week I will make some
gussets to add some strength to the area.
Anybody else have this problem ? How did you fix it, Has it spred ?
Mine goes from top to bottem (through the square hole) and continues under
to a threded hole on the underside. You can see it flex when you move the
steering wheel back and forth.
